A joint programme by Epi-interactive and Inspire Leaders
WHAT IS IT?Making Collaboration Work is a tailored training concept for science and research. Focus of the training is to provide researchers and science managers with the skills to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches which play an increasingly important role in science and research. WHO IS IT FOR?Making Collaboration Work is relevant to almost everyone working in research and science – from PhD students to science managers. The skills acquired will be of value for fund applications, planning, conducting and leading research projects, initiating collaborations, as well as leading science or science policy groups. WHY THIS TRAINING PROGRAMME?Science and research are increasingly conducted within collaborative and interdisciplinary settings and it is now recognised that such an approach provides unique advantages when addressing complex problems. This is illustrated by the huge interest in the topic of “one world, one medicine” and the subsequent effort to improve coordination between human, animal and ecosystem health. While this modern approach to science and research is promising on paper, the reality of collaborative research is quite challenging. Although there is generally a positive attitude towards interdisciplinary and collaborative thinking, together with high levels of discipline specific skills, one of the biggest challenges to the successful implementation of this approach is the high level of non-technical skills that are essential when making collaborative approaches work in practice. These skills are crucial to turn a good idea into a highly successful project, as currently collaborative science and research is often inefficient. In addition they are relevant for a wide range of institutions and projects including for example academic as well as policy- focussed working environments. In the face of the described trends, the ability to successfully work in such a collaborative environment is also becoming an increasingly important contributor to a successful career in science and research. HOW CAN WE HELP?Successful collaboration requires skills both in management and at the applied level. By providing participants with the tools to put modern research concepts into practice, this training will be of great benefit to individuals and organisation alike in improving their ability in for example leading projects efficiently, communicating clearly with peers of other disciplines and finding innovative ways to put research ideas into practice in an interdisciplinary setting. Our teaching approach is influenced by a growing body of research, which sheds light on the thinking, skills and behaviours that enable successful collaboration.
