Assistant / Associate Professor in Cell Biology

The Faculty of Sciences and Bio-engineering sciences, and in particular the Department of Biology of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel has a vacancy for a full-time:
ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN CELL BIOLOGY (Tenured position)
Starting date: 01/10/2011

Position description: We are inviting applications of outstanding scientists in the field of Cell Biology of eukaryotes. Applicants are expected to develop a highimpact research program and to participate in undergraduate and graduate education and training. The candidate is expected to be able to lead research projects and supervise M.Sc. and PhD research projects. The infrastructure and facilities of the Cell Genetics research group will be available.

The successful applicant will be requested to apply for external grants in order to obtain a significant amount of start-up funds. Two possible funding sources are:
1) ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (about 300k€/year for 5 years).

Note that because these are highly competitive funding sources, only applicants with a high profile CV and an excellent research proposal will be considered.

Research: The candidate should have a broad, interdisciplinary view on the field of Cell Biology with a research theme aiming to elucidate cellular processes. The preference goes to a research program that would be synergistic with the expertise already present (vertebrate and human) in the department. Applicants should have a strong research record and are expected to be involved in national and international networks. He/she has the capability of defining strategies and providing innovative leadership. The successful candidate will be encouraged to interact with various departments.

Teaching: The successful candidate will participate in a number of specialized undergraduate courses at Master level based on his/her research expertise. He/ she will also be responsible for at least one basis course in biology within the Bachelor program.

Requirements: A completed Ph.D. in a relevant field is required and substantial international postdoctoral experience is preferred. The candidate has excellent teaching skills and is able to motivate students. The candidate has excellent knowledge of English and Dutch, or a willingness to learn Dutch.
